1. Do you manufacture in your own facility, or subcontract?
This is the most important question and the one most often answered vaguely. A supplier who subcontracts cannot guarantee capacity, consistency, or that an audit you were shown applies to the factory actually making your shoes. Ask to see the production floor.
2. What is the minimum order, per colour and per style?
These are different numbers and the difference matters. A 600-pair style minimum split across two colourways at 300 each is very different from a flat 600 per colour. Get both figures in writing.
3. How long does sampling take, from confirmed specification?
Two to three weeks is achievable for a factory with in-house pattern and sample facilities. Longer usually means sampling is queued behind bulk production, or outsourced.
4. Which audits do you hold, and when were they last renewed?
SEDEX/SMETA and SA8000 cover working conditions; ISO 9001 covers quality management; the HIGG Index covers environmental performance. Ask for certificate numbers and expiry dates, not logos on a website.
5. What is your quality control process, and what AQL do you ship to?
A specific answer — the number of checkpoints in the line and the AQL standard applied at pre-shipment — tells you a system exists. A general answer about “strict quality standards” tells you nothing.
6. What is your on-time delivery rate, and how is it measured?
Any figure should come with its method. A rate measured against the original confirmed date means something; one measured against a revised date does not.
